Final Update

At this point, since my project is nearing its end, I have discontinued my use of Awoken. During the period in which I kept a dream journal, I had two lucid dreams (both of which were dream initiated). If I were to redo this project, I would modify my procedure such that I would perform more frequent reality checks. In this way, I believe that I would have been able to have achieved lucid dreams with greater regularity. In conclusion, this was a very fun and rewarding project and I would highly recommend that you try to lucid dream!

P.S. I made a slideshow summarizing my project here

Status Report #4

Since my last post, I have used Awoken (my lucid dream tool mobile application) with fair regularity with the exception of sleepovers. I have had zero lucid dreams since my third status report which is probably due to me failing to perform reality checks consistently. Here are my dream journal entries:

April 12: A person from Elementary school complained about her iPhone's short battery life and I told her to switch to Android. In a other dream, I had two pugs.

April 13: I dreamed about many of my peers.

April 14: I dreamed about a 90's sitcom style rap music video.

April 15: People were doing frontside airs at the skatepark.

April 16: N/A (Sleepover)

April 17: I found an apple watch on a college campus and earlier I was shoving big insects down my mouth.

April 18: I dreamed that instead of skin, I had scales.

April 19: I dreamed about a "dream" girl.

April 20: I remember someone remarking about how they would get their propeller to balance just prior to waking up.

April 21: My dreams were hard to remember but I think more than one involved skateboarding.

April 22: I had a dream in which I used muscles as a medium through which to shape rocks.

April 23: N/A (Sleepover)

April 24: I had a dream in which I was far better at skating than I am presently.

April 25: I think that I socialized with the same people that I did with the prior day.

April 26: I had a another dream with my "dream" girl who is but a figment of my imagination.

April 27: I recall no dreams.

Status Report #3

Since my last post, I have used Awoken (my lucid dream tool mobile application) regularly with the exception of sleepovers. I have had a single lucid dream since my second status report; I became lucid due to an unrealistic aspect of my dream meaning that the lucid dream was a dream initiated lucid dream (DILD).

March 11: I had a dream in which I could shoot webs like spider man and I used my lowers for good and personal gain.

March 12: N/A (Sleepover)

March 13: In one dream I used a dog bed as a pillow and in another I kicked a friend out of my house.

March 14: In my dream, I took a karate class like I did when I was in Elementary school.

March 15: In my dream, I made the argument for why frozen food is underrated.

March 16: In my dream a person told me that I should read the future right before I woke up. In an earlier dream I was riding my long board and I slipped out and it rolled beneath a large speeding truck and snapped in half; then it turned purple.

March 17: I got a cool carved tiki skateboard in my dream.

March 18: I had a dream that I was skating a real private skatepark called double rock. In an earlier dream I saw a cougar walking down a country road as I drove by and I took pictures of it.

March 19: I dreamed of a compilation of Thrasher Magazine's Hall of meat clips.

March 20: LUCID DREAMING OCCURRED. I had a lucid dream in which I realized that a part of my dream world failed to render correctly when I was taken onto this alien ship. Without getting too excited so as to wake myself, I produced an invisibility cloak so I could explore the ship.

March 21: In my dream I went to New York and visited my 4 year old cousin.

March 22: In my dream, I helped a warrior find his father and raced a Prius against a Benz and lost.

March 23: In my dream I remember learning to fight monsters to save the Earth from interplanetary invasion.

March 24: All I remember is having to learn something painfully tedious and being on the phone with my grandpa who turned out to be an excellent snowboarder.

March 25: I had a dream in which I was dreaming, woke up, and tried to remember what I dreamed about in anticipation of actually waking up and recording a dream journal entry. In an earlier dream I ate chocolate cake which is something I don't let myself do in reality and I felt intense regret within the dream.

March 26: N/A (Sleepover)

March 27: I got to Skate with Chris Cole and had to survive an zombie apocalypse in a later dream.

March 28: I had a nightmare in which I had to kill my friends and family in order to prevent them from becoming zombies.

March 29: I dreamed that I was Ying home from the east coast and my plan bad to make several stops due to a broken left wing part

March 30: A yellow snake ate it's own tail and in a later dream was wandering with a lot of people I used to be friends with.

March 31: I know that my dream involved Shasta and space.

April 1: There was a rocket made out of pb&j sandwiches.

April 2: One of my dreams involved a trampoline.

April 3: My dreams had a lot of similar themes to Pulp Fiction which I saw for the first time yesterday.

April 4: I thought an email notification was someone stabbing me with a knife in one dream so I went to record the dream only to realize I couldn't write anything because I was dreaming about recording the dream.

April 5: I have no recollection of any dreams.

April 6: I remember my father complaining to me in a dream.

April 7: I dreamed that my local skatepark was soaked and that I had to write an English essay.

April 8: I planned on doing something in my dream (in the dream) but it never happened.

April 9: N/A (Sleepover)

April 10: In my dream, Snoop Dogg tried to corner the market of his ears.

February 24: I dreamed that I was on the study trip.

February 25: I did not dream. I pulled my first all-nighter.

February 26: I dreamed that I was playing a new Star wars game although I was actually living the game. I killed Kylo Ren and stole his light saber.

February 27: I had a dream in which I stopped a terrorist attack and had the power of super speed.

February 28: I was hanging out with Nathanial and Eli in my dream, just like I did earlier that day.

March 2: In my dream I briefly Skated with the z boys.

March 3: I had a dream in which I was staying at a scary motel.

Status Report #1

Thus far, I have used the Awoken Lucid Dream Tool mobile application everyday since February 9 except for two days during which I didn't record dream journal entries because I had attended sleepovers (where contrary to their name, sleep is a rarity). I have had a single lucid dream between Feb. 9 and Feb. 23. I have rigorously followed my lucid dream procedure during this time span. I noticed that some common subjects of my dreams were school and violence which probably means that I think too much about school and have an anger issue that I didn't realize that I had. Below are my dream journal entries for each day I have used Awoken:

Feb 9: I dreamed that I was at my old school, Ocean Shore, and there was some sort of reunion event. The weird thing was that a lot of Shasta students with whom I did not go to Ocean Shore with were there.

Feb 10: LUCID DREAMING OCCURRED. I had a three distinct dreams. In one, Michael and I were skating this cool spot and some college frat boys were teasing us. In the next one, TJ, Carter S. and I went to a weird library near Daly City with the intent of sparring in it. The library had weird sparring equipment but it wasn't like a boxing gym. In the last one, I was trying to diffuse violence among some Shasta juniors and then the one who I was trying to protect threatened to beat me up so I beat him up. I became half awake prior to the fight and told myself that I would lucid dream, that I would have control over the situation. I had a small degree of control, I was dreaming and conscious of the fact that I was dreaming. I won the fight because of this (I think) but one of friends got hurt by the person I was fighting which was out of my control.

Feb 11: I shadowed Zach at Terra Nova.

Feb 12: I had a dream where I saw an epic female warrior in green and gold armor have  legendary fight with a giant evil meta knight who she threw off a cliff. In an earlier dream, some college girl gave a guy the wrong number when he asked for her number and it turned out to be mine so I was texted by the poor guy. In yet another dream, I was featured on ifunny although I still hadn't made an account. In another dream Eli's family adopted a half white half Latin American boy of about 2 years of age.

Feb 13: I lived in a cool Jedi sky palace.

Feb 14: I was hanging out with some old and new school friends; some of whom went to school with me years ago.

Feb 15: I dreamed about my classmates but it is really foggy.

Feb 16: I remember growing away from my friends.

Feb 17: I dropped my phone and the screen shattered.

Feb 18: I dreamed that I was in something very similar to the hunger games.

Feb 19: I had a dream where I went to a cool overnight camp with Shasta and at one point I had to shower naked I'm front of a bunch of male and female peers. It didn't seem that bad but it was awkward.

Feb 20: N/A (Sleepover)

Feb 21: N/A (Sleepover)

Feb 22: I dreamed that I was skating a cool addition to the Pacifica skatepark with friends.

Feb 23: I dreamed that I was wandering around Pacifica with my friends.

Lucid Dreaming Procedure UPDATED

I will adhere to the following research-based procedure (of my creation) to optimize my chance of achieving at least one lucid dream. Before this, I will identify the most important components of achieving a lucid dream: a dream journal, reality checks, backtracks, telling myself that I will have a lucid dream prior to falling asleep, and slow deep breaths. I would like to note that much of this can be done with the Awoken App, a lucid dreaming tool which I will be using. I made a video clarifying this below.

Without further ado, here is my procedure:

1.) Using Awoken, perform 5 daily reality checks during the hours that I am awake (07:00-21:20) by responding to my totem sound trigger. These reality checks will entail counting the 10 fingers on my hands in order to assess whether I am asleep or awake when my totem sound triggers a reality check.
a.) After each reality check, recall how I got to the present. This is a process known as backtracking.
b.) After both reality checks and backtracking, assess whether I am awake or asleep.
c.) If awake, continue what ever I was doing.
d.) If asleep, don't become too excited and begin to control the dream.
2.) Prior to falling asleep each night, tell myself, "I will have a lucid dream".
a.) If I wake up in the middle of the night, repeat the phrase to myself and fall back asleep.
b.) It is important to have the right mindset when trying to lucid dream.
3.) When falling asleep, visualize a single thing and try to maintain consciousness whilst entering the dream state, remember to take deep, slow breaths (yes, this is possible. It is a phenomenon known as a wake induced lucid dream).
a.) Resist the urge to turn over or itch while doing this.
4.) Routinely look for things that look impossible, if something bizarre happens, I could be dreaming.
5.) Every morning, create an entry in the Awoken dream journal and write about what I dreamed.
a.) Remember to use hashtags so that recurring themes can be more easily identified.
6.) Never confuse the vivid imaginations that often take place right before falling asleep for lucid dreams.
